Natural thermal pool on the side of a river. Now an official BC Park with camping.

Overview
Halfway Hot Springs is located approximately 25.6 km north of Nakusp, British Columbia, along Highway 23, followed by an 11 km drive up a Forest Service Road. The springs have evolved from a loosely managed destination to a provincial Recreation Site, now overseen by Recreation Sites and Trails BC. This shift occurred after years of unchecked partying and abuse, prompting provincial authorities to intervene and implement a caretaker system, improved infrastructure, and regulated access.

Facilities and Management
Visitors can expect a modest but well-maintained setup. Campsite pads, regularly serviced outhouses, a custom-built change room, and upgraded soaking pools have all been added or enhanced under provincial management. Day-use visits remain free of charge, though overnight stays incur a camping fee paid to the on-site caretaker between May 1 and October 31.

Visitor Experience and Etiquette
The soaking pools, tucked alongside a scenic stretch of river, attract a diverse mix of visitors throughout the year. Nudity is not uncommon, yet it is important to remember that public nudity technically remains illegal in British Columbia. Despite the relaxed atmosphere, all visitors are expected to respect the site’s guidelines, other guests’ privacy, and the natural environment.

Safety and Environmental Considerations
Halfway Hot Springs lies in a region where poison ivy thrives, so familiarity with the plant’s appearance is critical. Bears are frequent visitors to these forested areas, making bear spray and proper food storage important measures for both day visitors and overnight campers. Although the Forest Service Road is generally accessible, conditions can vary depending on weather and seasonal maintenance, so travelers should exercise caution and check local updates before setting out.
